ATOM A DQ Slammers take 1st home exhibition game with 8-1 win

2014-10-25

ATOM A DQ Slammers secured an 8-1 win against York North Coyotes in their first pre-season exhibition game at home on Oct. 25/14.

Following tryouts, team selection and after practicing for a couple of weeks the 2014-15 Atom A DQ Slammers finally had a chance to play in an actual game.  As the kids arrived at the arena, all dressed smartly in their shirts and ties, you could tell there was a mixture of excitement but also nervousness with this new squad.  It was also evident that the second year players were encouraging the rookies to do their best. Once the team finished the dryland they settled in to get ready for the game and were very excited to see their uniforms with names on the back for the first time.

Once the game started the Slammers applied some early pressure and got on the board early in the game with a quick snap shot from 2nd year sniper Nicholas Brennan assited by veteran players Issac McLaughlin and Carson Rideout  to put the home team up 1-0.  Score remained at 1-0 for some time even though the Slammers had several shots and quality scoring chances.  York North Coyotes goaltender, Gabe Atwin, made a number of quality saves to keep the score close but he could only hold off the pressure for so long before Kyle Gallagher was able to put away two back to back goals assisted by Kohan Ketch , Andrew Watson, and Cooper Jones making a 3-0 score.

Ty Schriver started the game in net and even though he only faced 5 shots he was very confident and had to make some solid saves.  Isaac Sparrow replaced Ty at the mid point and was a little busier having to face 11 shots.  One of the York North players was able to elude our defence and snuck through for a breakaway.  Coyote player made a nice move as Isaac tried to poke check puck away and he was able to give the visitors a little life with their only goal of the game.  Isaac was also very solid in net and made a number of quality saves to keep the Coyotes at one goal.

In the second period Isaac McLauglin tucked in a wrap around goal for his first of the year.  Soon after Nicholas was fed a beautiful pass from Kohan Ketch in the high slot and he buried it for his second of the game.

In the third period Isaac McLaughlin picked up the puck at our blue line and carried it down the offensive zone looking like he was going to take a  shot only to make a nifty pass at the last second across to Josh Everett who had no trouble finishing the job getting his first goal as a Slammer.  Nice setup Isaac!  Play of the day for sure.  Nick Brennan potted two more in the third with nice passes from Kohan Ketch and Carson Rideout to finish the day with four goals.

Slammers had a strong performance throughout the lineup with several heads up passing plays and all around great movement of the puck.  Team fired an impressive 41 shots on goal and only gave up 16 and the final score finished 8-1 for the home squad.  Isaac McLaughlin took home the Slammers ‘Player of the Game’ with some impressive heads up play and passing throughout the game.

Great game Slammers!!
